Differential Fluid Change
|

Being that it is a common maintenance thing and I just did a front
pinion seal, I decided that it was the perfect time to change the
differentials fluids. I am a firm believer in synthetic so I will be
using Mobil 1 75W-90 gear lube in this jeep. I change my fluids once
a year because the type of wheeling I do involves water and it gives
me the opportunity to check on the gear, seals and bearings to make
sure everything is O.K. But everyone is different.
Tools needed for this job are as listed:
- pan to catch old diff fluid
- 1/2 inch socket and socket wrench
- scraper
- hammer
1. Put a pan under the differential.
2. Remove all the bolts that hold the diff cover on.
3. Take a scraper and insert it in between the cover and the housing,
tap with a hammer if you have to.
4. Remove the cover and let the fluid drain out.
5. Remove old sealant around the housing.
6. Spray down gear and bearings with brake clean, wipe them dry and
remove any debris left behind.
7. Clean cover of old sealant and wash it down with brake clean.
8. Lay down a new bead of sealant - like 1/8 of an inch, stay on
the inside of the holes.
9. Smooth the bead down with your finger.
10. Install the cover onto housing and put the bolts back in.
11. Tighten down the bolts using a cris-cross pattern.
12. Remove the fill plug and fill up with the new fluid. Fill to when
the new fluid starts coming out of the hole, install the plug and you
are done. The amount of fluid you need is judged by the housing you
have and the type of differential.
I hope this helps you.
And a bad day wheeling is still better than a good day at work.
