Transmission Fluid Change and Deep Pan Installation - TJ/YJ, Auto trans
Submitted by WHTJP98
On a recommendation from a friend who owns a trans shop that I should install a deep trans pan on my jeep I finally did it. After looking around for a while I found out that Mopar has a part number for it and that it comes with everything you need.

So I went and talked to my friend at Jeep and gave him the part number and the next day I had the kit. After letting it sit in the garage for a month I finally got around to installing it. I painted my pan so don't worry - it does not come in yellow.

Tools you will need for this job:
- 1/2 inch socket wrench or 1/2 inch impact gun
- 1/2 inch drive 3/4 socket
- 3 mm L key
- 3/8 inch socket wrench or speed wrench or 3/8 impact gun
- 3/8 inch drive 13 mm socket
- scraper
- hammer
- pan to catch old trans fluid
- funnel
- a floor jack with a piece of wood - 2x4 or 4x4

1. Remove the four 13 mm nuts that hold the trans mount to the skid plate.

2. Place floor jack and a piece of wood on the tail of the transfer case.

3. Raise jack to take the load off of the skid plate.

4. Remove the six 3/4 bolts that hold the skid plate to the frame.

5. Lower the skid plate and move it to the side.

6. Place the catch pad under transmission.

7. Remove the 13 mm bolts that hold the pan to transmission.

8. Place the scraper between transmission and the pan to open up. Be careful - trans fluid will be coming out.

9. Lower the pan. Be careful - there is still some fluid in it.

10. Remove three 3mm hex head screws.

11. Remove the old filter.

12. Install the new filter and spacer with O-ring facing up. Put a little of trans fluid on the O-ring using the new bolt that came with the kit.

13. Tight down the filter bolts.

14. I used 3m weather sealant on the gasket to hold it on the pan.

15. Put a magnet back in the pan.

16. Install the new pan.

17. Install the skid plate - just follow steps 1 thru 5 backwards.

18. After everything is done fill the trans up with the new fluid. It took 5 quarts of ATF to fill my trans.

Start your jeep, let it run for a while and check the fluid. Get in the jeep, holding the brakes put it into drive, then reverse and back into park and check the fluid again. If everything is ok take it out on a test drive. After the test drive leave it running and check the fluid one more time.

I hope this helps you.

And a bad day wheeling is still better than a good day at work.
