The TJ had a problem with the turn signal. On left turn and on the brakes the back of the jeep looked like a tow truck - every light was flashing. After figuring out that the switch was the problem (and a common problem with TJ's) I ran over to my buddy at Jeep to get me a switch. After reading the shop manual on how to take it out I decided to talk to my brother who installs car stereos and alarms because there were some steps that did not make sense to me. So here is the modified way of doing it.
Tools needed for this job are as listed:
- A phillips screwdriver
- T20 torx screwdriver
1. You want to remove the two screws holding the lower dash panel on.
2. There are three screws holding the two halves of the steering column cover on.
3. Lower the tilt wheel and remove the upper and lower halves. You might have to wiggle the upper half out. It does come out.
4. There are two torx that hold the rain shield and bracket on which goes around the switch.
5. Remove rain shield, just side it over the turn signal handle.
6. Remove the two connectors on the back of the turn signal switch and then it is out.
Now you are half way done. All you have to do is install the new switch and reverse the direction. Test the switch when done to make sure it's working correctly.
